Tait's Bassets Only AKC Registered Basset Hound Puppies Since 1960 Kennel Picture Tour Our kennel is on our family farm located East of State College, PA on US322. We grow and sell premium quality Christmas trees (mostly choose and cut) as well as raising Basset Hound puppies. (Also, my sister-in-law has Tait Farm Foods on the farm which primarily produces gourmet fruit products.)
Above is a picture from across US322 showing most of the farm buildings in the center and one of the fields of trees on the right. The kennel is the building under the middle gray roof.
This is a view of the puppy yard side of the kennel. It shows the size of the grass yard that one litter has to play in. There are smaller but similar yards for the adults without puppies on the other side.
We took this picture from inside the kennel facing out with both doors open so that you could see the size and condition of our inside pens. Actually, most litters would have a bigger pen or two pens connected by Basset size doors. As you can see in this picture, and the one above, our puppies has direct access to the play yards. Except in bad weather, this is kept open 24hrs/day and allows them to exercise their instinct to relieve themselves outside and not soil their nest. This is a help in starting housebreaking.
Our litters always start out in a whelping (birthing) box. The mothers and pups are kept warm with lights and blankets for walls.
Our puppies enjoy playing outside, here they are working out on our "puppy gym." The gym was suggested by my wife Susan and then designed and built by Elton and John. During the winter of 2001, we totally rebuilt the pen dividers and housing for the adults on the west side of the kennel. Bassets love to see what you are doing so we built insulated houses with ramps to get to the top, like a rooftop deck. The first picture below shows the house (with the door off for the summer) and the door to the outside. They can go outside 24 hrs./day except in the most miserable weather. We use straw as bedding because it provides a renewable softness and coziness to their pens.
There is one divider with a deck right against it where the dogs love to gather to keep an eye on us. Below is a set of pictures showing how they entertain us.
